Winter

I actually took this photo when I returned from Christmas holidays in early January (with my new beautiful orange camera). I thought it was amusing. Oh, Ottawa, land of unceasing transportation difficulties. But we are nothing if not a resourceful bunch. No car? Too snowy to bike? Try Vrtucar! If all else fails, trudge through the snow, with groceries. Canadiana at its finest.

Winter is now here with a vengeance, as if my yearly bout of nasty NASTY cold/bronchitis/whatever-the-hell-virus this is. I have never been laid so low with a cold in my life. Here's hoping it ends soon. I've got lots of things to do in 2010 and I don't want a terrible immune system to slow me down. Irony? I got my flu shots (both H1N1 and seasonal flu) the weekend before I got sick. We're working on almost 2 weeks. Cough cough wheeze. Nice.

It's been a long time...

I haven't written in well over a year (we're getting close to almost 2) and I have been pondering for a while about getting back to this blog and turning it into something different. I'm not sure what that is, or if it will happen, but this is called Mercurial Musings for a reason. It's about my random and ever-changing musings on a variety of topics. However, it could use a little more focus. When I figure out that focus I'll be back to try to make it work. See you soon!

Overheard...

While waiting for the bus on Elgin...

"Cats love gin and juice. No really."

Gossip

Another great post on The Happiness Project today. I'm too shy to post a comment on Gretchen's site, but I really like what she had to say about gossip and how it can we like to mask it as something else to make us feel better.

You know what else makes me happy? Books. And talking about books with other people who like them. Yay new bookclub!

Things that make me happy

Some things that make me happy:

  • Sunshine

  • Hanging out with friends

  • Unexpected compliments

  • Smiles from strangers

  • A job well done

  • Being up early for a change

  • Good sleep

  • A nice meal

  • The feeling of completion

A comment on one of my entries also makes me happy. Gretchen Rubin of The Happiness Project read my blog and left me a comment! Very nice. Thanks for the compliment, Gretchen, and thanks for the inspiration!

I mean, come on, really

There are times in today's culture when we are not given an opportunity to allow our imaginations to roam, fill in spaces and gaps based on our own experiences and expecations, anticipate what happens next, who dunnit, etc.

This happens all too often in movie trailers that give away so much of the movie you feel like you've already watched it.

Sometimes reading the back of the book means you are practically told the entire plot of the novel.

Spoilers of television shows are rampant on the net.

And then there are is this book blurb:

Michael Ondaatje’s eagerly anticipated new novel, Divisadero, unravels a haunting story that ranges from northern California to central France, introducing characters who become part of our own lives. Divisadero brings together all of the elements for which Michael Ondaatje’s fiction is celebrated.

What the? How am I supposed to know what the book is about and whether or not I want to read it? Come on people!

And yet I am intrigued. Darn you Ondaatje book people!
